Fresh Violence Erupts in Ebonyi: 2 Beheaded, 7 Kidnapped, Houses Burnt

Abakaliki—In a violent outbreak early yesterday, suspected militants attacked Ikachi village in the Akparata area of Effium, Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. The assault led to the beheading of two individuals and the kidnapping of seven others. Five houses were also set ablaze, resulting in property damage worth millions of naira.

Dr. James Agena, President-General of the Effium Community, confirmed that the attackers, believed to be Ezza warriors, struck at around 3 a.m. The victims were identified as 19-year-old Obinna Aje and 78-year-old Ogenyi Abowu. Additionally, seven villagers, including five women and two men, were abducted, and twelve people sustained gunshot wounds.

Dr. Agena highlighted that this latest attack follows a similar incident on May 12, 2024, when alleged Ezza warriors killed and beheaded Mrs. Cecelia Omah in Effium urban. He called on the Ebonyi State government and security agencies to promptly arrest and prosecute those responsible for these atrocities, stressing the need to protect the peace-loving people of Effium.

This recent violence comes just before a scheduled peace committee meeting on May 21, 2024, aimed at addressing the ongoing conflict, which began in 2021. The prolonged crisis has resulted in numerous casualties, significant displacement, and extensive property damage.

Police spokesperson Ukandu Joshua confirmed the attack and stated that an investigation has been launched into the incident.
