The Lagos State government has identified unregistered tiger nut drinks as the primary cause of the recent cholera outbreak, according to Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health. The outbreak, which surged between June 10 and 11, primarily affected Lagos Island, Kosofe, and Eti-Osa.
Environmental and Health Concerns
Cholera, often linked to poor sanitation and contaminated water, has seen an increase due to the rainy season. The outbreak highlighted the prevalence of open defecation and reliance on wells, which become contaminated during floods. The state’s Environmental Health Services have been active in cleaning affected areas.
Investigation and Findings
In Eti-Osa, a survey revealed that many patients had consumed a tiger nut drink, leading officials to trace and test the product. It was found that these drinks were not registered with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), raising significant safety concerns. The cholera strain identified was Vibrio cholera subtype 01, known for its high infectivity and severity.
Response and Measures
The government has set up an emergency office in Yaba and intensified public health campaigns, emphasizing the importance of hygiene and discouraging self-medication with antibiotics. Free treatment, including oral rehydration therapy, is provided at public hospitals and primary healthcare centers.
Impact and Ongoing Efforts
The outbreak has claimed 21 lives so far, with efforts ongoing to contain the spread. Public awareness campaigns have led to the disappearance of the unregistered tiger nut drinks from the market. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) is monitoring the situation, with potential emergency declarations under consideration.
Collaborations and Public Assurance
The Lagos State government is collaborating with national and international bodies, including UNICEF, the Red Cross, and the World Health Organization (WHO), to manage the outbreak. Public health officials continue to reassure residents that measures are in place to control the spread, with schools and workplaces remaining open.
The situation remains under close watch, with daily assessments and community surveillance ensuring prompt response to any new cases.
