Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the recent general election, has urged the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a statement made at his Onitsha residence, Obi warned that Nigeria is on the verge of failure and stressed the need to uphold the rule of law. He pointed to court rulings that have granted Kanu bail as a reason for his immediate release.
“I don’t see any reason for Nnamdi Kanu’s continued detention, especially since the courts have granted him bail. The government must obey the court. The rule of law is a vital asset that we must uphold. I also appeal to the federal government to release all individuals in similar situations. We live in a democracy and should not engage in arbitrary actions outside the law,” Obi stated.
Obi also called for the release of all individuals detained for protesting, whether they are freedom fighters, End SARS protesters, or journalists. “We are a democratic country, and people have constitutional rights to express themselves and to protest peacefully. We must listen to those who express dissatisfaction. Acting dictatorial undermines our democracy,” he added.
