In a significant ruling, the Delta State High Court in Asaba has handed down a death sentence to Inspector Ubi Ebri of the Nigeria Police Force for the murder of phone dealer Onyeka Ibeh.
Justice C. D Diai, presiding over the case, found Ebri guilty of fatally shooting Ibeh during a routine police stop on April 5, 2023, as the victim and his wife were traveling from Ugbolu to Asaba. Despite cooperating with the police, Ibeh was shot in the head by Ebri after an extended delay in the search process.
The tragic incident sparked public outrage, prompting protests by Asaba youths, who demanded justice for the slain dealer. Following the court’s decision, the prosecution, represented by Ministry of Justice Director E.H Edema, hailed the verdict as a significant step toward ensuring justice for both the victim and society.
Ifeanyi Ibeh, the victim’s brother, expressed gratitude to the court for delivering justice to their family.
