Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know Friday morning

1.Governors are not considering a minimum wage that is higher than N70,000, it was learnt last night. At a meeting on Thursday in Abuja, the state helmsmen reviewed the economic situation and concluded that anything above N70,000 will not be affordable and sustainable.

2. There is no N5.4trillion provision for fuel subsidy this year, the Presidency said on Thursday. It said its position on fuel subsidy removal has not changed. In a statement by Mr Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the presidency said subsidy on fuel ended in May last year.

3. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested some intending pilgrims to the ongoing hajj in Saudi Arabia in Emerald Hotel, Ladipo, Oshodi, Lagos State. The agency said they were lodged in the hotel and caught while ingesting wraps of cocaine ahead of their flight to the holy land.

4. Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume on Thursday urged Nigerians to remain calm notwithstanding the prevailing economic challenges. He said that the current administration took over power when the economy was in a turbulent state, noting, however, that massive reforms were being undertaken.

5. The Sultan of Sokoto and president of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has declared Friday, June 7, 2024 as the first day of Dhu al-Hijjah 1445 AH. This is contained in a statement Thursday night from the National Moon Sighting Committee signed by its secretary, Malam Yahaya Muhammad Boyi.

6. Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, has accused the Bola Tinubu administration of diverting public funds through petrol subsidy. Atiku said the refusal of the present administration to reveal how much is being spent on subsidy shows that it is diverting funds secretly.

7. Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, has submitted the template for the planned new minimum wage to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Addressing State House Correspondents after the meeting with the President, the Minister said there was no cause for alarm.

8. Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police command have arrested a 35-year-old suspected ex-convict, Eddiong Anthony Matthew, who had been parading himself as a soldier in the rank of a warrant officer. A statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Timfon John, on Thursday in Uyo, said that the suspect was arrested on Wednesday at about 2 pm in a half-dressed military camouflage.

9. The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a man, Kazeem Ahmed, who specialised in using fabricated master keys to steal vehicles in the Ikorodu area of the state. The police also arrested three suspects, Ethel Ohamadike, Young Eze, 31, and Chukwuwando Okoye, 38, for buying the stolen vehicles from Ahmed.

10. The Senate on Thursday urged President Bola Tinubu to thoroughly review and evaluate strategies deployed in tackling insecurity. The lawmakers also urged the President to consider deployment of more forces to the troubled North-West of the country in order to ensure the protection of lives and property.
