The Secret Behind The Woman In Our Twenty Naira

The woman featured on the Nigerian 🇳🇬 twenty Naira note is Ladi Kwali. She was born in Kwali, in the Gwari region of Northern Nigeria, where pottery was a prevalent occupation among women.

Ladi Kwali’s exceptional pottery skills gained international recognition, with her work being showcased in Europe, Britain, and America. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, her pieces were exhibited at the Berkeley Galleries in London.

She became Nigeria’s most renowned potter, earning a doctorate and being made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1963, despite not having formal education. This demonstrates why I always emphasize that English is just a language, not a measure of intelligence.
