Ballon: Wes Brown Explains Why Rodri May Miss Out on Ballon d’Or

Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown has shared his perspective on why Rodri, Spain’s standout player in Euro 2024, might not secure the Ballon d’Or this year.

Brown, speaking on Reach’s Euro Thrash podcast, noted that Rodri’s position and style of play could hinder his chances. He emphasized that Rodri is not a flair player or a prolific goalscorer, which are typically favored traits for the prestigious award.

“Even when he joined City, he wasn’t immediately recognized. It takes time for people to realize his consistency,” Brown said, according to the Mirror. “His position, timing, and leadership are exceptional, but the Ballon d’Or often goes to flair players and goal scorers. However, he deserves a nomination.”

Rodri, a key player for Manchester City, made six appearances and scored a goal in Euro 2024. His performance earned him the Player of the Tournament award.
