Breaking News: Supreme Court grants LG financial autonomy

In a landmark decision on Thursday, the Supreme Court ruled that it is unconstitutional for state governors to control funds allocated to local government administrations. Justice Emmanuel Agim, delivering the judgment on behalf of the seven-member panel, stated that the 774 local government councils across the country should have the autonomy to manage their funds independently.

The court emphasized the division of government powers into federal, state, and local levels, asserting that only democratically elected local governments are legitimate. Justice Agim criticized state governments for undermining democracy by appointing caretaker committees instead of allowing elected councils to operate.

The ruling dismissed objections from state governors and supported a lawsuit filed by the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, seeking full financial autonomy for local governments. The Supreme Court confirmed the Attorney General’s authority to pursue the case, granting all requested reliefs and affirming the constitutional mandate for local government autonomy.

Further details are expected as the implications of this ruling unfold.
