Grammy-winning Canadian singer Celine Dion made a celebrated return to the stage at the 2024 Olympic Games opening ceremony in Paris on Friday, marking her first performance in four years.
The 56-year-old singer, who has been battling stiff-person syndrome, performed Édith Piaf’s “Hymne à l’amour” from the base of the Eiffel Tower, creating an instantly iconic moment.
Dion released a heartfelt statement after her performance, expressing her joy and honor at being part of the event. “I’m honored to have performed tonight for the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony, and so full of joy to be back in one of my very favorite cities!” she said. She also praised the athletes, celebrating their dedication and perseverance, and encouraged them to take pride in their achievements, regardless of the outcome.
This marks Dion’s second Olympic performance, following her appearance at the Atlanta 1996 Games. According to TMZ, Dion received payment for her performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Dion’s determination to perform again, despite her health challenges, was highlighted in a previous interview with Hoda Kotb on the Today Show. She vowed to return to live performances, even if it meant crawling to the stage.
