In a significant move during Thursday’s plenary session, the House of Representatives committed to donating 50% of their salaries for six months to tackle the nationwide hunger issue.
Presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, the session saw Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu propose the motion. Kalu urged his colleagues to support this initiative, highlighting the pressing need for additional resources to address the country’s challenges.
“This government is doing its best, but one year is not enough to address the challenges of this country. I want to plead with our colleagues to sacrifice 50% of our salary for a period of six months,” Kalu stated.
The current monthly salary for a representative is N600,000. By contributing half, each member will be adding N300,000 to a collective fund, resulting in a monthly total of N108 million and N648 million over six months.
