On July 13, 2024, the JCC Chairman of Anambra State hosted the 5th Senate South Eastern Pre-Convention of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University.

Prominent student leaders attended, including the SUG Presidents from various institutions such as Paul University, Unizik, and Anambra State Polytechnic, as well as the SUG Attorney COOU and the NANS Coordinator South East, along with the Vice President South East of the National Association of Nigerian Colleges of Education Students (NANCE).

The convention focused on critical issues related to student unionism and welfare in southeastern Nigeria. Key concerns discussed included police brutality, raised by Honourable Comrade Makua Emmanuel, a student of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University. He commended the Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Kate Azuka Omenugha, for her swift response to student issues, particularly regarding campus lighting and overall student welfare.

Comrade Makua Emmanuel also acknowledged the efforts of the COOU SUG Attorney General in addressing student harassment and intimidation. Additionally, the COOU SUG Chief Judge requested the establishment of an SUG Office on campus to handle student complaints effectively.

In response, NANS JCC Chairman Comrade Mathew Okpala praised the Vice Chancellor for her infrastructural improvements and assured that a suitable SUG office would soon be provided. He also mentioned that the promise made by the Executive Governor, Professor Soludo, to provide an 80-seater bus for COOU students is expected to be fulfilled within the year.

The convention concluded with a sense of calm and anticipation as the school management prepares for the upcoming SUG elections.
