The Nigeria Police Force has condemned a viral video showing officers performing guard duties for a young man who is seen disrespecting the naira.
In a statement released on Saturday, Force Spokesperson ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi announced that an investigation has been launched to identify and discipline the involved officers.
The police labeled the video as “demeaning” and “unethical,” and have urged the young man in the video to come forward for questioning.
“We are aware of a video trending on social media where some policemen are seen performing guard duties for a young man and encouraging him to abuse the naira, contrary to the CBN Act,” the statement read. “We condemn the content of the video and all forms of unethical, demeaning, un-dignifying, and unprofessional acts by officers, especially those that subject them to servitude.”
The police are taking steps to identify the officers in the video to impose appropriate sanctions. They also called on the young man to present himself to the nearest Nigeria Police Force Intelligence Department or contact the Lagos State Police Command in Ikeja for a proper investigation.
The police expressed gratitude to Nigerians for bringing this issue to public attention and assured them that corrective and punitive measures will be thoroughly pursued.
