An Itsekiri activist from the Warri Kingdom, Delta State, identified as ‘Lord Of Warri’, has petitioned Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, demanding justice for the murder of Alex Timileyi. Timileyi, a student at Ajayi Crowther University in Oyo State, was allegedly beaten to death by fellow students in a hostel on campus after being accused of stealing a mobile phone.
The tragic incident reportedly occurred from Friday evening until Saturday morning, according to PUNCH Online. In an open letter shared on social media, the activist emphasized that Timileyi was a first cousin to the Olú of Warri, OgÃamè Atuwatsé III. The letter was also addressed to the Nigeria Police, President Bola Tinubu, and the Department of State Services, among others.
Expressing deep sorrow, the activist, tweeting under the handle #Lord_Of_Warri, lamented the impact of Timileyi's death on the Itsekiri community and called for the perpetrators to be held accountable. He criticized the vigilante justice meted out to Timileyi, stressing the importance of due process and fair trial.
The activist highlighted that Timileyi, the son of Princess Antonia Emiko and first cousin to the current Olú of Warri, was subjected to prolonged torture without being handed over to the police. He condemned the university’s handling of the situation and called for a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.
Ajayi Crowther University, in a statement, denied any cult activities on its campus and reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards anti-social behavior. The university clarified that the students involved in the incident acted out of uncontrolled emotions and assured that those responsible have been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for investigation.
The activist concluded by underscoring the historical ties between the Yoruba and Itsekiri people, urging Governor Makinde to ensure justice as a matter of communal solidarity.
