The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nsukka Zone, has voiced dissatisfaction with President Bola Tinubu's first year in office, highlighting a series of unfulfilled promises.
Speaking at Benue State University, Makurdi, Zonal Coordinator Raphael Amokaha criticized the government for its failure to renegotiate the 2009 Federal Government/ASUU agreement. Key issues include inadequate university funding, compromised university autonomy through the Integrated Personnel Payment Information System, unpaid academic allowances, and withheld salaries.
Amokaha acknowledged President Tinubu's recent pledge to review university governing council appointments but cautioned against using these positions as political rewards. Contrary to Tinubu's promise to end university strikes, Amokaha warned that another strike is imminent.
ASUU called for the immediate signing and implementation of the renegotiated 2009 agreement, adjusted for current hyperinflation, and demanded the payment of withheld salaries. Amokaha emphasized the importance of appointing experienced and reputable individuals to university governing councils, pointing out that figures like Professors Attahiru Jega, Olu Obafemi, and Munzali Jibril should be treated with respect and not dismissed lightly.
