In a significant development, the Edo State government has commenced the payment of a N70,000 minimum wage to workers across the state. This decision, which fulfills a promise made by Governor Godwin Obaseki, has been met with appreciation from the Nigeria Labour Congress Chairman for Edo State, Odion Olaye, who commended the governor for prioritizing workers' welfare.
Olaye expressed his gratitude, stating, "I can confirm to you that the salary increase has been effected and workers are now earning N70,000 as minimum wage. I commend the governor for this." He also urged workers to reciprocate the gesture by increasing their efforts to contribute to the state's economic growth.
Governor Obaseki announced the wage increase during the inauguration of the Labour House in Benin City on April 29, 2024. He emphasized the necessity of adjusting the minimum wage to reflect the current economic situation in the country.
In response to the implementation of the new minimum wage, Chris Nehikhare, the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, affirmed the government's commitment to workers' welfare. He stated, "The Edo State government has paid the May salaries of workers in the state, reflecting the implementation of the N70,000 new minimum wage."
Nehikhare further encouraged workers to remain dedicated to their roles in the state's development, underscoring the government's commitment to meeting its obligations to workers even before the end of the month.
