Benin City, Edo State – Medium, Small, and Micro Enterprises (MSMEs) in Edo State have been bolstered with a N300 million grant from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the state government.
Governor Godwin Obaseki announced the development on Wednesday during an interactive session with the fund coordinator. He emphasized the programme’s significant impact on fostering the growth of MSMEs in the state.
“The UNDP’s invaluable partnership has facilitated the growth of 3,000 business owners through this fund,” Governor Obaseki stated. He extended his gratitude to the UNDP, highlighting the collaborative efforts of the Edo State Investment Promotion Office, Edo State Skills Development Agency, Ministry of Business, Trade and Cooperatives, and other relevant business entities.
“The disbursement of N300 million to 3,000 MSMEs across Edo State has helped mitigate the adverse effects of socio-economic challenges,” Obaseki said. “This strategic partnership addresses key developmental challenges and enhances our state’s economic landscape. The UNDP’s commitment to inclusive growth aligns with our vision for the economic development and prosperity of Edo people.”
Governor Obaseki noted that the grant plays a crucial role in uplifting small businesses, which are the backbone of the local economy. “With access to financial resources, MSMEs in the state have been able to innovate, expand operations, and create jobs, positioning Edo as a prime investment destination and bolstering economic resilience,” he added. “By fostering entrepreneurship and innovation, we are creating economic opportunities and nurturing a culture of self-reliance and sustainability among our citizens.”
Kelvin Uwaibi, Managing Director of the Edo State Investment Promotion Office, praised the UNDP grant for enabling significant progress towards a prosperous Edo State. “We call on more global investors and Edo people, both locally and abroad, to invest in our homeland. Cooperation and dedication can make Edo a shining example of success,” he said.
Anita Eribo, Acting Managing Director of the Edo State Skills Development Agency, also commended the UNDP for its support.
The grant is seen as a critical step in driving economic growth and resilience for small businesses in Edo State.
