Breaking News: Protest Erupts in Gaya Over Disbandment of Kano Emirate

Emir of Kano

Residents of Gaya have taken to the streets in protest following the dissolution of their emirate, one of the five affected by the recent repeal of the Kano Emirates Council Law.

On Thursday, May 23, the Kano State House of Assembly repealed the law that former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje used in 2020 to dethrone Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II and create four additional emirates: Rano, Gaya, Karaye, and Bichi.

Governor Abba Yusuf signed the new law on Thursday, May 25, and announced the immediate dissolution of the four extra emirates. He directed all monarchs, including Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir, the Emir of Gaya, to hand over their duties to Comrade Abdulsalam Gwarzo, the Deputy Governor, who oversees the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

In response, residents of Gaya emirate staged a protest, carrying placards and chanting anti-government slogans to express their disapproval. The protesters alleged that the dissolution was politically motivated and unjust.

Further developments are expected as the situation continues to unfold.
