ABUJA – The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has experienced significant improvements in security during the first year of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, according to the Department of Security Services (DSS) of the FCT Administration (FCTA).
Adamu Gwary, Director of the DSS, highlighted these developments in an interview on Tuesday, noting a substantial decline in security breaches. Gwary attributed these improvements to the proactive measures introduced since Mr. Nyesom Wike took office as FCT Minister in August 2023.
“Reports of security incidents have dramatically decreased,” Gwary stated. “Previously, daily reports of various issues were common, but now, weeks can pass without a single incident.”
One notable achievement is the complete resolution of the "manhood theft" issue, a problem that was at its peak when Tinubu's administration began. Gwary emphasized that while challenges remain, the visible reduction in criminal activities marks a significant improvement.
The director credited the successes to Minister Wike’s proactive approach, including community engagement and substantial logistical support for security agencies. Wike has organized town hall meetings across the FCT's six Area Councils to foster community involvement in tackling insecurity. He also provided vehicles to traditional rulers to enhance their mobility and engagement with their communities.
Additionally, the minister established security task forces to address serious crimes such as kidnapping and one-chance robberies. The administration has further bolstered security by distributing motorcycles and patrol vehicles equipped with modern communication gadgets and combat gear to security agencies and vigilance groups.
Plans are also in place to procure surveillance drones and other advanced equipment to enhance the capabilities of security agencies throughout the city and its suburbs, particularly in areas plagued by kidnapping.
Gwary emphasized the importance of public cooperation with security efforts, urging residents to report suspicious activities promptly.
“Security is everyone’s responsibility. If you see something, say something, and we will act,” he assured.
These measures and community efforts are aimed at ensuring a safer environment in the FCT under the Tinubu administration.
