The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has reiterated its call for a sit-at-home on May 30 across the South-East to commemorate "Biafra Heroes Day." The group has urged all residents to remain indoors to honor those who fought and died during the Biafran civil war from 1967 to 1970.
In preparation for the day, IPOB requested the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, to reschedule any planned activities. The day is designated to remember the sacrifices made by Biafran heroes during the conflict.
Emma Powerful, IPOB’s spokesperson, issued a statement on Tuesday underscoring the importance of this commemoration. He emphasized that no government or security agency should harass anyone during the event, and declared a ban on all social activities in Biafra Land. Markets, schools, banks, and all government and private businesses are to remain closed from 6 am to 6 pm on May 30.
"The global IPOB family reminds everyone in Biafra territory that the May 30 sit-at-home is mandatory to honor Biafra Heroes Day. We expect full compliance for this one day," the statement read.
Powerful asserted that remembering those who fought for Biafra’s freedom is crucial and warned against any harassment by authorities. He called on state governors to ensure the safety of people and property during the sit-at-home. WAEC students are advised to wear their school uniforms for identification purposes.
The statement also criticized the Federal Government, stating that they cannot prevent the remembrance of Biafra’s fallen heroes. "Those who died defending our land from the genocidal war deserve to be remembered and celebrated," Powerful added.
IPOB also paid tribute to international supporters such as Bruce Mayrock from the USA, and notable Biafran figures like General Phillip Efiong, Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, and others who contributed significantly to the Biafran cause.
Biafrans in the diaspora are encouraged to obtain permits for rallies in their respective countries to raise awareness about the Biafran struggle and the resilience of its heroes. "Biafra is coming, and our resolve for liberation remains unshaken," the statement concluded.
