Akwa Ibom Resident Shares Mother's Struggle with Peptic Ulcer and Refusal of Blood Transfusion Due to Religious Beliefs
Samuel Ekemini, a resident of Akwa Ibom, has shared the distressing story of his mother, Mrs. Fortune Samuel, who has been diagnosed with a peptic ulcer and is now facing severe health complications. Despite the urgent need for a blood transfusion to facilitate a necessary surgery, Mrs. Samuel has refused the procedure due to her Jehovah's Witnesses beliefs.
Mrs. Samuel's condition began to deteriorate in early 2019 when she started experiencing persistent headaches and severe restlessness. Despite multiple hospital visits and various treatments, her health continued to decline. By 2022, she had become extremely weak and could no longer perform daily activities or attend church services.
Samuel, 29, who works as an aide on media and publicity for the executive director of the Federal Housing Authority in Abuja, recounted the series of events leading to his mother's current state. Diagnosed with a peptic ulcer caused by the Helicobacter pylori bacteria, Mrs. Samuel developed a large, painful boil near her throat, making it difficult for her to eat or speak.
Financial constraints have compounded the family's struggles, with Samuel and his father bearing the cost of her treatments. Despite their efforts, including resorting to traditional medicine, Mrs. Samuel's condition has only worsened. The latest medical recommendation is surgery, which requires a blood transfusion. However, Mrs. Samuel's steadfast adherence to her religious beliefs prohibits her from accepting blood products.
The family, including Samuel's three siblings, is in a desperate situation, seeking alternative medical solutions that align with their mother's religious convictions. Samuel has expressed his deep concern and helplessness, emphasizing his desire to respect his mother's beliefs while striving to find a way to save her life.
Samuel, who now resides in Abuja, sends a significant portion of his salary back home to support his family. He remains hopeful for a solution that will allow his mother to receive the care she needs without violating her religious principles.
The family is appealing for medical advice and assistance from professionals who may offer alternative treatments compatible with Mrs. Samuel's faith.
