IN JUST TWO WEEKS, ADAMAWA RECORDS OVER 200 DEATHS TO HEAT WAVES
No fewer than 200 people have been killed by a dangerous humid heat that has been experienced from the 1st to 13th of this month in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.
There have been scores of about 200 deaths as a result of a heat wave that started earlier this month in Yola, Adamawa State capital. According to reports from settlers in the community, it is said that the temperature was recorded high to about 47 to 50 degrees which experts has ascentained to be of high risk that could cause cramps and exhaustion, but there have been rumours of exceeded death toll of reported figure from may 1 to 13.
Speaking with a high ranked civil servant who happened to be an eye witness while briefing newsmen said that they could have been more than the numbers officially reported as the heatwave saw about 20 deaths recorded per day within the period.
It is ascertained according residents of the community, they accounted that heat waves has been a norm in the the community and parts of the State but that of this year had been excessive where the scenario has been bad that about 35 bodies were on Thursday taken by some attendants of a cemetery for burial within the time and those mostly affected were of the age gap of 50-60 years.
According to a ward leader of the community, he said, they haven't experienced such death toll in the past 48 years.
He mentioned that many were blaming the incidents on the excessive temperatures. Speaking back, Barkindo said that in 1976, the intense heat forced people to search for cool spots by excavating holes beneath bridges near rivers. He claimed that throughout the previous few weeks, Yola's early morning temperatures exceeded 45 degrees.
Most of the people who passed away recently, according to him, had no symptoms before they passed away. He stated that there have been instances where individuals passed away unexpectedly without exhibiting any symptoms of disease or suffering beforehand. The leader of the ward stated that a committee had been formed to consider closing the nearly full Damare cemetery.
