NAFDAC officials inspecting a store
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has closed Jaff Foods Limited, a rice factory in Niger State, due to unsanitary processing methods. During the same inspection, NAFDAC also halted operations at Golden Age Water for lack of proper batch coding and date marking, and confiscated unregistered herbal teas from Jonapal Supermarket in Minna.
The actions were part of a routine inspection led by Shaba Mohammed, NAFDAC's Director for the North Central Zone. Mohammed highlighted that despite the factory’s registration with the agency, it failed to maintain good manufacturing practices, resulting in its closure and issuance of compliance directives.
"The rice processing facility has been sealed for not adhering to the regulations required for production and certification. The environment is unhygienic, and their production does not meet good manufacturing practice standards," Mohammed stated.
NAFDAC also found that some key personnel at the factory lacked the necessary knowledge for production. In response, the agency organized a one-day workshop for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to educate them on the Automated Product Administration and Monitoring System (NAPAMS). This e-registration and data capture system aims to simplify the product registration process with NAFDAC.
Mohammed encouraged SMEs to utilize NAPAMS for easier interaction with the agency and urged the public to report any potentially harmful products. He emphasized the importance of checking expiry dates before purchasing products and reporting any concerns to NAFDAC.
James Kigbu, NAFDAC's Niger State coordinator, opened the workshop, reiterating its purpose to inform SMEs about the NAPAMS portal and facilitate business operations.
