Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) triumphed over Lyon with a 2-1 victory in the French Cup final on Saturday, marking Kylian Mbappe's last game for the club. Mbappe, who is expected to join Real Madrid, did not add to his record 256 goals for PSG. Goals from Ousmane Dembele and Fabian Ruiz secured the win, with Jake O’Brien scoring for Lyon in the second half.
This victory brings PSG's French Cup tally to 15, including four since Mbappe's arrival in 2017. The win completes a domestic double for PSG under new coach Luis Enrique, despite their Champions League semi-final exit to Borussia Dortmund.
The final, held at Lille's Stade Pierre-Mauroy due to preparations for the Olympics at Stade de France, was marred by clashes between rival fans before the game. Incidents involved around 100 Lyon supporters and 200 PSG fans, resulting in injuries and the burning of two coaches. French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence.
Mbappe, leaving PSG with numerous titles including six Ligue 1 championships, concluded his final season with 44 goals. Despite early chances in the match, it was Dembele and Ruiz who secured the lead. Lyon’s comeback efforts, including a goal from O’Brien and attempts by Nicolas Tagliafico and Alexandre Lacazette, were thwarted by PSG’s defense and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
