A 27-year-old woman, Khanyisile Mndayi, is in critical condition and in a coma after being stabbed over 20 times by her boyfriend in front of their children on Sunday.
The brutal attack occurred at their residence in Berea, Johannesburg. According to a Facebook post by Gillian Mogale, Mndayi had returned home late from her shift when she was assaulted and repeatedly stabbed by her boyfriend, identified as Bongani.
"Mndayi came home late from her shift at Tempo. Upon her arrival at the Metropolitan flat in Berea, she was insulted, beaten, and stabbed multiple times in front of her kids by her boyfriend, BONGANI, known as Luuk De Jong on Facebook. She is now fighting for her life in hospital," Mogale wrote.
Women For Change, a non-profit organization combating gender-based violence and femicide in South Africa, reported on Monday that the boyfriend fled after locking the injured Mndayi and her children inside.
"Khanyisile Vanessa Mndayi, 27, was stabbed more than twenty times, allegedly by her boyfriend, in front of their children on May 26, 2024. She is currently in a coma, fighting for her life. It is alleged that the boyfriend attacked her at their home in Berea, Johannesburg, and then locked her and the children inside," the statement read.
The boyfriend was arrested when he returned, allegedly intending to inflict further harm.
"The boyfriend took his belongings, leaving Khanysile and the children behind. Neighbors alerted the police, and when the boyfriend came back, police arrested him. We pray for Khanysisile’s healing and recovery and call for justice for her and her children," the statement added.
