The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) has issued a public advisory following a severe cholera outbreak affecting several states across Nigeria, resulting in 30 deaths and 1,141 suspected cases.
NBMA's Head of Information and Communications, Mrs. Gloria Ogbaki, relayed a statement from Director-General Dr. Agnes Asagbra, emphasizing the urgent need for heightened caution and preventive measures as the nation approaches the festive Salah celebrations.
"As we approach this festive period, it is critical that we prioritize community health and safety," Dr. Asagbra stated. The outbreak has been reported in the states of Bayelsa, Zamfara, Abia, Cross River, Bauchi, Delta, Katsina, Imo, Nasarawa, and Lagos.
Cholera, a highly contagious bacterial infection contracted through contaminated food or water, poses a significant health risk. The NBMA, in collaboration with health authorities, is actively monitoring the outbreak and implementing measures to contain its spread.
Dr. Asagbra urged the public to adopt stringent hygiene practices, including boiling drinking water or using certified purification methods, thoroughly washing hands with soap and water, especially before eating or preparing food, and after using the toilet. She also recommended consuming thoroughly cooked food, avoiding raw foods unless they can be safely peeled or washed, and maintaining clean environments to prevent contamination.
The NBMA called on Nigerians to remain vigilant, adhere to these hygiene practices, and report any suspected cholera cases to the nearest hospital promptly.
"NBMA urges all Nigerians to be vigilant and adhere to these hygiene practices to protect themselves and their loved ones from cholera," Dr. Asagbra added.
