The Federal Government, led by Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has announced plans to relocate 29 correctional centers currently situated in urban areas. This decision is aimed at reducing the security risks posed by the proximity of these prisons to densely populated regions.
The affected facilities include prominent ones such as Ikoyi Correctional Centre, Apapa, Agodi, Enugu, and Suleja. Tunji-Ojo disclosed this information during an appearance on "The Big Interview," hosted by O’tega ‘The Tiger’ Ogra.
According to the minister, an audit of the country's 256 correctional centers highlighted the necessity of this relocation. He emphasized that the presence of a correctional facility in urban areas like Ikoyi, Lagos, poses significant security threats and potential damage to the nation's reputation in the event of a prison break or attack.
"Our long-term plan involves relocating about 29 correctional centers that have been encroached upon by urban development," Tunji-Ojo stated. "Urbanization is inevitable, but we must ensure the safety and security of our citizens. Relocating even one facility, like Ikoyi, will significantly enhance our security posture."
The minister further stressed the importance of adhering to international standards, which require a minimum buffer zone of 100 meters between correctional centers and other buildings. This move, he believes, will help mitigate the risks associated with urban prisons and enhance overall public safety.
