The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced plans to prosecute approximately 100 individuals arrested for internet fraud in Enugu State, following the completion of ongoing investigations.
The EFCC revealed in a statement on its Facebook page on Wednesday that its operatives conducted a sting operation that led to the arrests. The operation was based on actionable intelligence regarding the suspects' activities.
Recovered items from the suspects include mobile phones, laptops, and cars.
The statement partly read, “Operatives of the Enugu Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have apprehended 100 suspected internet fraudsters in various parts of Enugu State.
"The suspects were nabbed in early morning sting operations on Wednesday, May 5, 2024, based on actionable intelligence about the operations of an organized syndicate of internet fraudsters in Ibagwa-Nike and other areas in the Enugu metropolis.
"Recovered items include three exotic cars, mobile phones, and laptops."
The EFCC confirmed that the suspects would face arraignment after the conclusion of the investigation.
"The suspects will be arraigned in court upon completion of the investigations," the statement concluded.
Additionally, the EFCC mentioned that no fewer than 29 individuals arrested in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) would face trial if found guilty of involvement in internet fraud and related offenses. These arrests were also made following intelligence reports received by the anti-graft agency.
