EXCLUSIVE: Senate President and governors call urgent meeting with Labour leaders to discuss strike

In an effort to prevent a nationwide strike, Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the Nigeria Governors Forum have invited Organized Labour leaders to an emergency meeting tonight, sources revealed to our correspondent on Sunday afternoon.

“A meeting has been scheduled by the Senate President and the Nigeria Governors Forum for tonight,” an informed source stated.

On Friday, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) announced an indefinite nationwide strike starting Monday, June 3, 2024, due to the Federal Government's refusal to raise the proposed minimum wage above N60,000.

NLC President Joe Ajaero declared that the strike was the result of unsuccessful negotiations between the government and organized labour.

Despite the government's final offer of N60,000, up from an initial N57,000, the labour unions deemed the proposal inadequate.

During negotiations, labour revised its demand, reducing it from an initial N497,000 to N494,000. However, the discussions stalled as the government stuck to its N60,000 offer, leading to the decision for a nationwide indefinite strike.
