In response to rising political tensions, Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State convened a high-level security council meeting on Tuesday at the Government House in Port Harcourt. The meeting included top security agency heads and was called to address the unrest following the end of tenure for local government chairmen.
The closed-door session focused on recent disturbances at local government secretariats and the broader security challenges facing the state. After the meeting, Governor Fubara spoke to the press, highlighting the need for effective strategies to prevent further invasions of local government offices and to ensure the stability of governmental functions.
Fubara warned the former council chairmen against attempting to reclaim their positions unlawfully, emphasizing the importance of respecting the rule of law and democratic processes. He also raised concerns about an alleged plot by political opponents to target his supporters, vowing to protect all residents and their properties.
"Anyone attempting to make such arrests will have to confront me directly," Fubara declared, underscoring his commitment to maintaining order and safeguarding democracy in Rivers State.
