The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Niger Delta University, Amassoma, has called on Nigerians to resist the Federal Government's proposed plans to utilize pension funds for developmental projects.
During a press conference on Friday, ASUU Chairperson Lucky Bebeteidoh highlighted the Finance Minister's recent statements indicating the government's intention to use the pension funds, which are vital savings for many Nigerians. Bebeteidoh emphasized that, legally, the government is permitted to access only 5% of these funds, but current actions suggest an overreach.
In addition to the pension fund issue, ASUU members staged a protest, demanding that the government honor previously signed agreements regarding the funding and revitalization of public universities. Protesters carried placards with messages such as "Implement UTAS in place of IPPIS" and "Niger Delta University needs improved funding from the Bayelsa State Government."
Bebeteidoh also addressed other contentious issues, including the illegal dissolution of governing councils, the release of withheld salaries, and the implementation of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) instead of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).
ASUU criticized the Federal Government for failing to renegotiate the 2009 agreement, noting that after initial payments during former President Goodluck Jonathan's administration, no further payments have been made. The union plans to increase media engagement and public demonstrations to highlight these unresolved issues.
In a related matter, ASUU expressed dissatisfaction with the Bayelsa State Government's lack of attention to Niger Delta University's needs. Bebeteidoh called on Governor Douye Diri to address issues such as inadequate funding, infrastructure development, and staff accommodation. He also urged the state government to approve the 35/25% wage award for university staff, aligning with the payments already received by federal academic staff.
Bebeteidoh concluded by stressing the urgent need for the state government to invest in faculty buildings, staff offices, laboratories, and student hostels to enhance the university's infrastructure and overall educational environment.
