The controversy surrounding the death of Chukwudi Abraham, a motor mechanic, while in detention at the Octopus Strike Force of the Rivers State Police Command in Port Harcourt remains unresolved. Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the leading Igbo socio-cultural organization, has protested, seeking justice.
Members of Ohanaeze Ndigbo gathered at the spare parts market in Ikoku, Mile Two area of Port Harcourt, where Chukwudi’s shop was located. They marched after visiting his family to offer condolences.
Protesters called for a thorough investigation into Chukwudi’s death in January, suspecting foul play. They urged the Inspector General of Police to uncover the truth, identify those responsible, and ensure they are prosecuted.
Sir Sam Nwokolo, Eze Ndi Igbo in Rivers and Bayelsa states, claimed Chukwudi was arrested and detained illegally by a tactical police unit on a vendetta mission, disputing police allegations that Chukwudi was a kidnapper. He stated that an examination of the body indicated torture and demanded an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Nwokolo emphasized the importance of justice and maintaining peace, urging the government to hold those responsible accountable. He noted Chukwudi’s role as the family breadwinner, supporting his wife, children, and elderly parents.
Chukwudi’s brother, Chibueze Abraham, expressed anger over the police's refusal to grant access to Chukwudi after his arrest on January 11, 2024. The family was shocked to learn of his death via social media and petitioned the Inspector General for justice.
State police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko denied allegations of torture, stating Chukwudi was implicated in kidnapping, armed robbery, and cultism. She described his involvement in a September 2023 kidnapping and assured the public that the State Criminal Investigation Department is investigating his death.
