Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party, has condemned the recent killing of five soldiers in Abia State. In a statement released on Friday via X, Obi expressed his deep distress and outrage over the incident, describing it as a stark reminder of the worsening insecurity in Nigeria.
“I am deeply saddened and appalled by the attack on our courageous soldiers in Abia State, which resulted in the death of five soldiers. This reprehensible act underscores the escalating insecurity and violence plaguing our country,” Obi stated.
The attack, which occurred on Thursday at a checkpoint at Obikabia junction in Aba, was reportedly carried out by suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as they attempted to enforce a sit-at-home order to commemorate Biafra Day. The assailants also burned down security patrol vehicles during the attack.
Offering his condolences to the families of the deceased soldiers and the people of Abia State, Obi emphasized the urgent need for the nation to enhance the protection of its citizens and security personnel. “Their sacrifice will never be forgotten, and we owe it to them to demand accountability and justice. Our inability to protect our citizens and security forces reflects a significant failure of the Nigerian state,” he said.
Obi called for an immediate and thorough investigation to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice. “I strongly condemn this atrocity and call for a swift and comprehensive investigation to ensure those responsible are punished,” he asserted.
Expressing solidarity with the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, and the people of the state, Obi reiterated the need for prompt and decisive action against the ongoing violence. “The continued brutality and bloodshed in our nation must be met with decisive action, not empty words,” he said.
The attack has sparked widespread outrage and raised concerns about the increasing violence and insecurity across the nation.
