In a national address on 2024 Democracy Day, President Bola Tinubu covered numerous issues facing the country and committed to making democracy a fundamental aspect of Nigerian life.
He started by congratulating Nigerians on the 25th anniversary of continuous democratic governance and recalled the struggles and sacrifices made to achieve it, highlighting key figures like Chief MKO Abiola and others. Tinubu honored both the fallen and living heroes of Nigeria’s democratic movement and praised the critical role of journalists.
Tinubu emphasized that democracy goes beyond elections, embodying a way of life that respects diverse opinions and resolving differences without force. He stressed the importance of leaders serving the common good.
Reflecting on the transition from dictatorship to democracy 25 years ago, he affirmed that democracy, despite its challenges, remains the best form of governance. He acknowledged ongoing economic difficulties and outlined reforms aimed at long-term growth, promising to listen to the people and negotiate in good faith.
Tinubu concluded by encouraging Nigerians to remain committed to democracy and to work together for a prosperous future, ending with a call to keep the spirit of democracy alive for future generations.
