On Thursday, the Senate highlighted that in the past year, members introduced approximately 477 bills, with only 25 being passed into law, demonstrating its dedication to legislative activities.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele provided this information in a statement commemorating the first anniversary of the 10th Senate.
"Since its inauguration on June 13, 2023, the 10th Senate has introduced 477 bills. Of these, 25 have been fully enacted into law, while others are at various stages of the legislative process," Bamidele stated.
He acknowledged that while the percentage of fully passed bills—5.24%—might seem low, the Senate has been addressing other critical national priorities as mandated by the Constitution. Additionally, the Senate has passed 115 resolutions addressing significant economic and national stability issues, based on motions sponsored by various senators.
Bamidele emphasized that the number of fully passed bills should not be the sole measure of legislative performance. "Different reasons account for the low number of fully enacted legislations. This can be ascribed mainly to other issues of highly fundamental national priority that occupied the attention of the Senate," he explained.
Apart from legislative activities, the Senate also screened and confirmed 215 nominees for various political offices, including appointments to the Federal Executive Council, Central Bank of Nigeria, and leadership positions in the Armed Forces, Police, and other key agencies. Over the past 366 days, the Senate has strategically collaborated with key public institutions.
