Just in: Tinubu Expands Green Economy Committee, Inauguration Set for July

President Bola Tinubu has expanded the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions, originally announced on May 19, 2024, with 26 members. The expansion was confirmed in a statement by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, who also revealed that the committee will be inaugurated in July.

The Green Economic Programme, a United Nations initiative, aims to support investment in low-carbon development and green sectors. The additional members of the committee include representatives from various federal ministries and special offices, such as the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources (Gas), Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science & Technology, and the NNPCL. Special Assistant to the President on Energy Transition, Ms. Yasmin Mohammed, and Mr. Somkele Awa-Kalu from the Energy Transition Office are also among the new members.

The statement highlighted President Tinubu's call for diligence, dedication, and patriotism in executing the committee's mission, aligning with his administration's climate action and green industrial growth agenda for the benefit of Nigeria and Africa.

Additionally, the president has defined the role of the Office of the Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action, establishing it as the lead negotiator on climate-related matters, carbon market initiatives, and international engagements. This office will also coordinate activities across federal ministries and agencies, ensuring alignment with Nigeria’s climate goals and Nationally Determined Contributions.

The statement further outlined the office’s responsibilities, including supervising the Energy Transition Office, acting as the chief diplomat on climate-related engagements, and overseeing the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) operations. It will also chair the Presidential Steering Committee on Project Evergreen.
