Organised Labour has suspended its nationwide strike for five days to facilitate ongoing negotiations on the new national minimum wage with the tripartite committee. This temporary halt, confirmed by a senior labour union source speaking anonymously to Vanguard, aims to ensure uninterrupted discussions.
The suspension follows a series of resolutions reached during a Monday night meeting between labour leaders and government officials, including Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume. Akume affirmed that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is committed to setting a minimum wage above N60,000 and assured that no workers would face repercussions for participating in the strike. He also stated that the tripartite committee would meet daily over the next week to finalize the new minimum wage.
After a 10 a.m. meeting with the Federal Government’s Tripartite Committee on Tuesday, labour leaders decided to pause the strike. Consequently, all government and private offices are expected to reopen and resume normal operations.
This development marks a significant step towards resolving the minimum wage issue, enabling the tripartite committee to work towards an agreeable national minimum wage without further disruptions.
