The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has refuted claims that its operatives mistreated suspects during a raid on two nightclubs in Akure, Ondo State. The operation on June 8 resulted in the arrest of 127 alleged internet fraudsters.
Eyewitnesses from one of the raided clubs accused EFCC operatives of using tear gas, beating, and arresting patrons. A video posted by X user Oluyemi Fasipe purportedly showed women being dehumanized at a club in Akure.
In a Sunday statement, EFCC’s Head of Media & Publicity, Dele Oyewale, dismissed these allegations, stating that EFCC personnel do not use tear gas during such operations. He suggested that the viral video showing two women with whip scars might have been fabricated.
Oyewale announced plans for forensic analysis of the video to determine its authenticity and identify those responsible for creating it. He emphasized that the EFCC's operation was conducted professionally, based on credible intelligence, and devoid of any incidents.
He also denied reports of damage to the club’s CCTV system, clarifying that the device was removed by a club staff member at the operatives' request to preserve footage for investigation. A club manager, who confessed to involvement in the alleged crime, is assisting with the investigation.
Profiling of the suspects has been completed, and they will face prosecution, Oyewale confirmed.
