Pastor Oye Baruwa of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Talitakumi parish, has announced his decision to stop the collection of tithes and offerings from his congregation, citing the economic difficulties faced by his members.
In an exclusive interview with AJIBADE OMAPE, Pastor Baruwa, also known as Prophet Dr. Emmanuel Baruwa (JP) or Baba Talitakumi, explained the rationale behind his decision. He noted that the removal of the fuel subsidy and the rising cost of food have severely impacted his congregation's financial stability, making it difficult for many to afford transportation to church, let alone additional offerings.
Pastor Baruwa emphasized that his priority is the well-being of his members. "If someone spends N2,000 on transportation to church and has only N3,000 left, they shouldn't be compelled to give the remaining as an offering. God’s blessings are not contingent on financial contributions," he said. In response to the economic strain, the church has been distributing food to those in need every first Sunday of the month since last year.
To further support his community, Pastor Baruwa is selling essential food items, such as rice and garri, at significantly reduced prices. "We aim to alleviate the burden of the high cost of living," he stated.
The pastor's call for other church leaders to adopt similar measures has not been widely embraced, which he attributes to a lack of compassion for the poor. "Many pastors are focused on their own wealth rather than the needs of their congregation," he remarked.
This is not the first time Pastor Baruwa has ceased the collection of offerings; he did so during the COVID-19 pandemic, although without publicizing the move. He credits his mentor, Primate Babatunde Elijah, for instilling in him the importance of standing firm on such decisions.
Pastor Baruwa dismissed claims that his actions were for social media attention, affirming that his motivations were genuine and divinely inspired. He recounted how the financial struggles of two church members influenced his decision.
The suspension of offerings applies to all branches of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, with free food distribution extending to anyone in need, regardless of religious affiliation.
Despite criticism, Pastor Baruwa remains resolute, believing that God will provide for those who serve faithfully. He called on other pastors to trust in divine provision and focus on alleviating the hardships faced by their congregations. "If we stop collecting offerings and continue to pray for our members, God will show us mercy and provide," he asserted.
Pastor Baruwa also revealed that his church project commenced before stopping offerings and continues to progress, underscoring his belief in God’s grace and provision. He encouraged fellow pastors to follow his example and prioritize their congregations' needs over financial gain.
