The Labour Party's Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, criticized the Federal Government on Monday for considering the purchase of new aircraft for the Presidential fleet.
Last week, the House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence directed the Federal Government to procure new aircraft for President Bola Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima. This recommendation followed a report on the status of the current Presidential Air Fleet, which had recently seen three planes marked for sale.
Obi condemned the proposal as an egregious example of government insensitivity amid the nation's severe economic struggles. He expressed his concerns on his social media platform, emphasizing that the move was particularly troubling given the current economic crisis characterized by hyperinflation, a depreciating currency, and widespread poverty.
"This demonstrates extreme insensitivity to citizens’ struggles," Obi remarked. "With rising insecurity, poverty, hunger, and homelessness, this decision highlights the disconnect between the government and the people. It is unacceptable, especially now when our country faces significant challenges, including a high debt profile, and our citizens are in greater need."
Obi further noted that the presidential jets, averaging 12 years in age, were originally purchased when Nigerians had better economic stability. He pointed out the stark contrast in priorities, citing the example of the US Vice President’s residence, which has only undergone major renovations twice in over a century, both funded by taxpayers.
Calling for a redirection of government priorities, Obi urged the leadership to focus on addressing the fundamental needs of Nigerians, such as education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation. He concluded, "It is time to stop this impunity, insensitivity, and shamelessness and refocus on the needs of our people. Let us work together to build a nation that truly serves its people, not just the interests of a few."
