Bishop Johnson, a retired Captain of the United States Army, has urged political leaders and freedom fighters to find a way to release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.
Johnson advocates for a political solution to ensure justice, equity, and fairness for Kanu. He expressed these views in an open letter on Friday titled “Defend Justice, Equity, Fairness for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and Other Prisoners of Conscience.”
This call for action follows a similar plea from former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who also suggested seeking a political resolution for Kanu’s case and addressing the killings of soldiers in Abia State by suspected separatists.
Kanu has been detained by the Department of State Services since his arrest in Kenya in June 2021.
In his letter, Johnson warned that ignoring the plight of Kanu and other prisoners of conscience sets a dangerous precedent that could have long-term repercussions for the nation.
“As we navigate governance and policy-making, it is crucial to uphold values that define humanity and democratic societies—justice, equity, and fairness—especially when fundamental rights are at stake.
“Today, we must focus on the urgent issue of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and other prisoners of conscience.
“Kanu’s case highlights the importance of defending individual rights and dignity, irrespective of tribe, religion, beliefs, or associations.
“As political leaders, you have a sacred duty to promote justice, equity, and fairness in our society.
“Failure to advocate for Kanu and other prisoners of conscience now may set a harmful precedent that could haunt us all.
“Inaction against injustice and inequality betrays the principles you vowed to defend and threatens the core of our democracy.”
