Under the guidance of former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr, Benin's win propelled them to second place in the group, sharing four points with leaders Rwanda. Nigeria, now fourth, had not played but dropped in standings due to this result.
Despite Rwanda's loss, the outcome presents an opportunity for Nigeria. A victory against South Africa in Uyo on Friday (today) would see the Super Eagles ascend to the top of the table with five points, overtaking Rwanda.
Following today's match, Nigeria will face Benin again in Ivory Coast on Monday, while South Africa will take on Zimbabwe.
