In a significant crackdown on crime, the Anambra State Police Command has arrested 200 suspects over the past two months and recovered a cache of weapons and stolen vehicles. The Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, announced these achievements during a press briefing at the command’s headquarters in Awka.
Among the recovered items are over 33 different types of firearms, including AK-47s, pump-action guns, and locally made pistols, along with more than 1,644 rounds of various types of ammunition and 27 stolen vehicles.
Commissioner Itam credited these successes to the ongoing innovations in operational strategies and crime prevention within the command. He stated, “Today marks the 60th day since I assumed this national assignment to serve Ndi Anambra. I am delighted to update the public on our achievements in maintaining law and order.”
He highlighted the command's efforts in intelligence gathering and collaboration with other security agencies, vigilante groups, and stakeholders. This cooperative approach has led to significant arrests, the rescue of kidnapped victims, and the recovery of illegal arms and stolen property.
To enhance policing efficiency, the command has initiated training programs for officers and organized security summits with informal security sectors, including vigilante groups and hunters.
Commissioner Itam praised Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his support in restructuring the state's security architecture. He also emphasized ongoing consultations with traditional rulers, market leaders, youth groups, and civil society organizations to combat crime.
The command is promoting Alternative Dispute Resolution and community policing principles to resolve local issues. Additionally, campaigns against cultism and other vices are being intensified to educate the youth on the dangers of criminal activities.
In response to recent social media content attempting to tarnish the police's image, Itam urged journalists to verify information with the command's Public Relations Department before publication. He warned individuals involved in criminal activities to cease their actions, stating, "Those terrorizing innocent citizens will be held accountable for their crimes."
