Aya Nakamura Takes the Stage at Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony Amidst Controversy

Aya Nakamura, the most streamed female Francophone artist globally, has performed at the Paris 2024 opening ceremony. Born in Mali and raised in France, the 28-year-old pop star holds French citizenship and boasts multiple platinum records. Growing up in the Parisian suburbs, Nakamura has now found herself embroiled in France's culture wars.

Speculation about Nakamura performing an Edith Piaf song at the Games' Opening Ceremony sparked debate. Members of France’s far-right questioned whether she represented French heritage and values, with fringe group Les Natifs making derogatory remarks on social media.

Nakamura responded on X, formerly known as Twitter, stating, "I’m becoming the number one state subject in debates …but what do I really owe you all? Nothing.” She has received support from Rachida Dati, France’s Minister of Culture, who warned against using racism as a pretext for attacks on Nakamura.
