In a significant courtroom development, the involuntary manslaughter case against actor Alec Baldwin was dismissed on Friday, July 12, after a judge ruled that prosecutors failed to properly share evidence with the defense. The case stemmed from the October 21, 2021, fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film "Rust."
Baldwin’s legal journey, lasting nearly three years, concluded without a verdict. The actor, visibly emotional, shed tears of relief and embraced his wife, Hilaria, as the decision was announced. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer, who presided over the case, dismissed it with prejudice, preventing any future prosecution on the same charges.

The trial revolved around the tragic shooting that occurred while Baldwin was practicing a "cross draw" with a prop gun, which unexpectedly discharged a live round, killing Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. Baldwin, who pleaded not guilty, faced the possibility of up to 18 months in prison.
Opening Statements and Defense Argument
During the trial's opening statements, prosecutors accused Baldwin of violating basic firearm safety rules by pointing the prop gun at Hutchins and pulling the trigger. Baldwin’s defense countered, arguing that the film’s armorer and the first assistant director, responsible for firearm safety on set, failed to ensure the prop gun was safe, allowing a live bullet to be loaded.
Previous Cases and Sentences
This was the third criminal case related to the on-set shooting. In March, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the armorer for "Rust," was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months in prison. Dave Halls, the assistant director, pleaded no contest to negligent use of a deadly weapon and received six months of probation and a suspended sentence.
