BREAKING News: Pres. Tinubu re-elected ECOWAS Chairman

President Tinubu Re-elected as ECOWAS Chairman for Another Year

Abuja, Nigeria - President Bola Tinubu has been re-elected for an additional one-year term as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of States and Government. The unanimous decision was made by fellow Heads of Government during the 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority, held at the State House in Abuja on Sunday.

Tinubu's current tenure, which was set to end on July 9, 2024, will now extend for another year. In his acceptance speech, President Tinubu expressed his commitment to continuing his service alongside other leaders, stating, "I have accepted to continue to deliver on this service with the great men and women on this democratic journey, to serve our interest and build democratic values on the structure we inherited."

Sources within the Presidency had indicated on Saturday night that Tinubu's re-election was a possibility, with debates about whether he should hand over or continue. Ultimately, the decision was made to extend his leadership.

Tinubu initially assumed the role of Chairman during the 63rd Ordinary Session of the regional bloc in July of the previous year, held in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau. Further details are expected to follow.
