The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has vehemently denied allegations made by socialite Ismaila Mustapha, popularly known as Mompha, who accused the agency of being "the most useless and corrupt Nigeria government agency."
Mompha's allegations surfaced on Instagram after a court witness testified that N35 billion was discovered in his accounts, related to an ongoing money laundering case against him.
In response, the EFCC issued a statement denouncing Mompha's claims as baseless and malicious. The agency urged Mompha to provide evidence supporting his accusations. They emphasized that such statements from an accused individual in a criminal trial should be dismissed as desperate attempts to deflect attention from the charges he faces, including conspiracy to launder funds and failure to disclose assets.
"The attention of the EFCC has been drawn to the unsubstantiated claims made by Ismaila Mustapha, alleging corruption by the Commission's operatives," the statement read. "These accusations strike at the heart of the Commission's integrity and must be challenged."
The EFCC further accused Mompha of attempting to undermine their work by launching a media campaign against them instead of addressing the issues in court. They assured the public that such tactics would not deter their efforts to prosecute the case to its conclusion.
EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede has directed that Mompha be invited to present any evidence of corruption within the agency and substantiate his claims. The Commission affirmed its commitment to maintaining its reputation and continuing its work without being distracted by baseless allegations.
The public has been advised to disregard Mompha's statements and focus on the ongoing legal proceedings.
