French football legend Hugo Lloris has condemned a controversial racist chant sung by Argentina players after their Copa America victory over Colombia. The song, which was featured in a video posted on social media by Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez, included racist and discriminatory language.
Fernandez is now facing potential sanctions from the Premier League, and Chelsea has initiated an internal disciplinary process. World Cup-winning captain Lloris described the song as "a proper attack on French people," urging the Albiceleste to set a better example for young fans.
"Argentina are the face of football right now, in South America, in the world. They deserve a lot of credit for their achievements over the past four or five years," Lloris stated. "But this was a proper attack on the French people, especially those with African heritage."
Lloris emphasized the need for responsibility, especially in moments of triumph, stating, "Winning demands even more responsibility. We all stand against discrimination and racism. I hope it was a mistake, and they will learn from it."
Fernandez has since apologized, claiming the video was a result of the "euphoria" of winning the title and insisting that the song's words do not reflect his beliefs or character. The chant allegedly claimed that French players are of Angolan, Nigerian, and Cameroonian descent.
