IGP Orders Nationwide Police Protection for Protesters

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has mandated police authorities to ensure the safety of participants in the upcoming #EndBadGovernance protest, scheduled from August 1 to 10, 2024.

This directive was issued in a letter on Monday in response to a request from human rights lawyer Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa. Representing the Take It Back Movement, one of the protest organizers, Adegboruwa sought police protection for the demonstrators in his letter dated July 26, 2024.

IGP Egbetokun’s response, dated July 29, 2024, instructed senior police officers to comply with Adegboruwa’s request. The response, signed by the IGP’s Principal Staff Officer, CP Johnson Adenola, specified that Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (Operations and Intelligence), Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, and Commissioners of Police across Nigeria are to provide necessary coverage.

Furthermore, CP Adenola conveyed that the IGP plans to meet with Adegboruwa at the Police Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, to discuss the matter further.

The #EndBadGovernance protest, aimed at addressing economic hardships, has garnered significant support on social media.
