The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued a fervent plea for the unconditional release of their leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, due to his rapidly declining health.
Emma Powerful, IPOB's Media and Publicity Secretary, stated that Kanu's life is in jeopardy while he remains in solitary confinement at the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja. The group warned of severe repercussions if any harm befalls Kanu.
“The global family and movement of IPOB, led by our resolute leader, Mazi Nnamdi Okwu Kanu, once again calls for his unconditional release from DSS solitary confinement over his deteriorating health condition,” said Powerful. IPOB emphasized that both Nigerian and international courts have ordered Kanu's release, yet the Nigerian government has not complied.
IPOB highlighted that prominent figures, including 50 members of the National Assembly, have called for Kanu's release. Despite this, the current administration, like its predecessor, has ignored these appeals. They also noted the government's dismissal of charges against other activists, contrasting it with Kanu's continued detention.
The group insists that the Federal Government is intentionally provoking IPOB and the Igbo community by keeping Kanu in confinement. IPOB maintains a non-violent stance in its pursuit of Biafra's independence despite governmental repression.
“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is seriously sick and must be released unconditionally from DSS solitary confinement for him to treat himself before something unpredictable and unimaginable happens to him,” the statement concluded. IPOB warned that Nigeria would face dire consequences if any harm comes to Kanu.
