As the #EndBadGovernance protest commences today, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued an advisory to the Nigerian Government, security agencies, and protest organizers to ensure the exercise remains peaceful.
NHRC Executive Secretary Tony Ojukwu, SAN, announced the advisory on Wednesday evening in Abuja, aligning with the Commission's mandate under Section 5 of its enabling Act.
Despite efforts by President Bola Tinubu and other influential figures to halt the protest, the 'hunger protest' is scheduled to run from 1st August to 10th August. Activist Omoyele Sowore confirmed the protest is proceeding as planned, dismissing rumors of its cancellation.
The advisory addresses fears of potential violence, urging the government, security agencies, and organizers to take steps to maintain peace. Key recommendations include:
Federal and State Governments:
- Uphold Fundamental Human Rights and facilitate peaceful assemblies.
- Prevent disruptions by counter-demonstrators or hostile forces.
- Avoid the use of deadly force and prioritize human life preservation.
Nigerian Police and Law Enforcement:
- Follow UN guidelines on the use of force, using it only when necessary.
- Respect protesters' rights and ensure freedom of movement.
- Protect public and private properties and investigate any human rights violations promptly.
Protest Leaders:
- Maintain peace and avoid provocative actions.
- Cooperate with law enforcement to ensure a lawful demonstration and apprehend offenders.
The NHRC emphasized dialogue and respect for human rights as key to addressing grievances while maintaining public order. Ojukwu confirmed that the NHRC will monitor the protests to ensure adherence to human rights principles.
